I genuinely love my work family but if I left the job I'd probably never see them again. And, horrible as it sounds, don't let affection for your work family hold you back. You don't need to quit or even tell them you're looking elsewhere. Even starting from scratch again I wouldn't spend more than three months bussing before I'd expect to be waiting for at least one shift a week.Īsk for what you want and if your current boss won't give it then find one who will. Not a chance in hell I'd wait a year and a half to have started working the bar and there is no way I'd spend that length of time doing a preliminary job leading to the thing I would want to do. I still do shifts as a waiter and as a food runner but I also get to work as a barman which is my preference.
That's how I became a barman within two months of starting working in service. In my place I volunteered to do a shift in hand to learn the basics of the bar. You should at least be getting the slow shifts to start off. Don't take that bullshit, it's not like you just walked in the door. At worst it's leverage to be a server in your current place. Should I simply keep my head down and keep working, and hope they change their minds, or should I start looking for a serving job somewhere else? The head server told me that they may be trying to hang on to me as a busser for as long as they can because they appreciate my work and don't want to have to replace me, but I've got a strong desire to be a server, and bussing is definitely taking it's toll on me. We're currently low on servers right now, and my manager's are hiring other new people to fill the vacancies, and won't even consider me, and it's pretty crushing, as all of my coworkers have spent a fair amount of time and effort giving me server training in their spare time so I'll be even more promotable. My managers are very much aware of my desire to be a server, and they have acknowledged my hard work, but they have just told me that I shouldn't expect a promotion for over a year. I've spent a lot of time learning all our food and liquor items, and cultivated strong relationships with many of our regulars. I've worked as a busboy at a TGIChilibees type corporate chain for the last 4 months and have worked really hard to work my way up to server.
Very similar to another thread posted recently, It’s ok if you don’t approve of tip culture, but it’s not ok to bait folks into arguing about it, tell them to get a better job, or otherwise blame them for being upset when they don’t get tipped a culturally appropriate amount RELATED SUBREDDITS!
